reflecting lower U.S. grain sorghum import prospect likely to result from the impending change in Chinese corn
stockpile management policies to be implemented in October 2016.
Strong grain sorghum imports by China over the last 2‐3 marketing years have been the driving factor in
sharply increased U.S. grain sorghum exports over the same period. However, the Chinese government has
signaled that the domestic price support structure that was a key factor in motivating Chinese imports of U.S.
grain sorghum may be adjusted or changed in the near future. If so such changes could cause a marked
reduction in U.S. grain sorghum export shipments to the Chinese. With the changes announced on March 29th,
these concerns about lower U.S. grain sorghum export prospects are now more likely to become a reality.
As of March 17th, with 30.5 of 52 weeks (58.65%) of “current crop” MY 2015/16 complete, 205.8 mb of U.S.
grain sorghum had been shipped for export – equal to 63.3% of the USDA’s updated projection for “current
crop” MY 2015/16 of 325 mb (http://apps.fas.usda.gov/export‐sales/esrd1.html ). An additional 50.4 mb of
U.S. grain sorghum had been sold for future export sales in the remainder of “current crop” MY 2015/16 – to
be shipped prior to August 31, 2016 (the end of “current crop” MY 2015/16).
Adding together 205.8 mb in past shipments plus 50.4 mb in forward sales amounts to 256.3 mb, or
78.85% of the USDA’s 325 mb U.S. grain sorghum export target for “current crop” MY 2015/16 in the March 9th
USDA WASDE report, with 58.65% (30.5/52 weeks) of the marketing year completed. United States’ grain
sorghum export shipments need to average 5.55 mb per week to meet the USDA’s projection of 325 mb in
“current crop” MY 2015/16 by August 31, 2016 – the end of the “current crop” 2015/16 marketing year.
Actual U.S. grain sorghum export shipments of 5.9 mb and 5.6 mb in the weeks ending March 10th and 17th
were “on pace” to achieve the USDA’s projection of 325 mb for “new crop” MY 2015/16.
