Interactive Crop Basis Tool
This interactive tool can be used to examine historical weekly nearby basis for corn, grain sorghum (milo), soybeans, and wheat for various locations in Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri, Oklahoma, and parts of Colorado and Texas. Basis is calculated by subtracting the nearby futures price from the cash price (Wednesday), where nearby is defined as the futures contract closest to expiration without going into the delivery month. Basis captures the effects of local supply and demand, as well as transportation costs, on commodity prices.
In this database, a year is defined as having 48 weeks with four weeks per month (months with five Wednesdays have the 4th and 5th weeks averaged and reported as the 4th week). Thus, week 1 = first week of January, week 5 = first week of February, week 9 = first week of March, and so on. To examine historical basis choose a location (pick city and state or enter zip code), the commodity desired, and the time period of interest. After identifying the information of interest, basis information (if available) can be viewed in either table or chart format.
